of Medical Research is aiming to change that using the stem cells found in umbilical cord blood (UCB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at Hudson Institute, Monash Children\u2019s Hospital and Monash University have begun a trial using UCB stem cells to try to halt the effects of prenatal stroke, giving newborn babies the best chance of living healthy lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial is made possible by a new cell therapies capability at Hudson Institute, the first in the southeast of Melbourne, along with industry partner, Cell Care. <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/atul-malhotra\/\">Associate Professor&nbsp;Atul Malhotra<\/a> says it could be a game-changer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stem-cells-to-treat-prenatal-stroke\">Stem cells to treat prenatal stroke<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senior Neonatologist and Head of Early Neurodevelopment Clinic at Monash Children&#8217;s Hospital said: \u201cEvery year in Australia about 600 babies suffer a stroke in-utero and the effects can be devastating, including cerebral palsy and a range of other neurodevelopmental conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Gordon-R6M20851.jpg\"><img pregnancy, but until now there\u2019s been very little we could do to combat the effects on the child,\u201d A\/Prof Malhotra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/facilities\/hudson-cell-therapies\/\">Hudson Institute\u2019s Cell Therapies Platform<\/a>, Dr Gordon McPhee, said the purpose of the trial is to prove that this type of treatment is safe, practical and possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudson Institute\u2019s Cell Therapies Platform allows clinicians in the Monash Medical Precinct to have blood products processed on-site for the first time, avoiding the need for expensive and time-consuming transport to the Melbourne CBD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn this <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/stellar-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STELLAR trial<\/a>, stem cells from a baby\u2019s own cord blood are collected at birth and re-introduced to the bloodstream in the early weeks of life, and that type of treatment is only possible thanks to the technology we now have access to here at Hudson Institute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The science underlying this trial is the product of a team of dedicated researchers led by <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/suzanne-miller\/\">Professor Suzanne Miller<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/courtney-mcdonald\/\">Dr Courtney MacDonald<\/a> at Hudson Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" We knew it couldn&#8217;t hurt Chase; it could only help him.
