Lee-Anne\u2019s story: Finding strength in the sea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In February 2024, Lee-Anne Matthews received news no one ever wants to hear \u2013 stage 4 ovarian cancer. After enduring chemotherapy and surgery, Lee-Anne experienced nine precious months in remission. But when the cancer returned, she faced it with the same determination that has carried her through every challenge. Her most recent results bring hope\u2014her CA125 levels are low, and scans show a significant reduction in the cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite her own journey, Lee-Anne chooses to give back. Each month, she makes a donation to support Hudson Institute\u2019s\u00a0ovarian cancer research<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cMy meagre monthly donation is somewhat selfish and self-motivated,\u201d she admits with a smile. \u201cOne Powerball and a larger donation is on its way!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"Angelina<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Angelina\u2019s story: Hope in the face of Ovarian Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Angelina Reardon went in for a routine scan in 2021, she never imagined her life was about to change forever. What doctors first thought was a harmless cyst turned out to be stage 3C low-grade serous ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatments have changed little in 30 years, leaving women like Angelina to face the same options, their mothers and grandmothers once had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why Angelina is passionate about the research happening here at Hudson Institute, led by\u00a0Dr Maree Bilandzic<\/a>\u00a0and is also a\u00a0regular giver<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cResearch is so important,\u201d Angelina says. \u201cThere\u2019s no test for ovarian cancer, and symptoms can be minimal. I hope and pray they will find a test and a cure soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Stomach cancer and H.pylori
Janine\u2019s story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m not a millionaire and there are other diseases I could have donated to, but stomach cancer is so much more prevalent than I\u2019d realised, and I know my donation will make a difference.”<\/em> \u2013 Janine Flatt, Bequestor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an African-American US military veteran, Bruce Hall never knew he was in a high-risk group for stomach cancer linked to gastric bacteria (H.pylori<\/em>) infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No-one expected this fit, non-smoking teetotaller to succumb to stomach cancer at the age of 64.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family\u2019s community rallies in support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jessica <\/strong>sadly passed away in 2022 at the age of 13 after a brave fight with a rare brain tumour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When her family generously requested donations in lieu of flowers, their community rallied behind them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of the nearly $20,000 raised, Hudson Institute was able to purchase a digital microscope that allows a more comprehensive analysis of cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cBy raising funds in Jessica\u2019s name for this important research, we are hopeful that one day another family won\u2019t have to lose a child to a similar disease.\u201d – Jessica\u2019s father Luke<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"Cade<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Honouring a young life cut short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cade Watts <\/strong>was only 15 when he died, but his family and friends are determined that his legacy will be large \u2013 their fundraiser for sarcoma research, Climbing for Cade<\/a>, has made sure of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid their devastation at his loss, Cade\u2019s loved ones determined to do what they could to help other kids and other families facing this awful diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

“We are raising funds in hope that further research into this rare disease could one day mean that no other child will suffer from this insidious disease and improved treatment options may be made available for children experiencing Ewing sarcoma.\u201d \u2013 Cades\u2019 parents<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"Inner<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Inner Wheel Foundation continued support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A collaboration that goes back further than 10 years, is the one we are lucky to share with Inner Wheel, one of the largest voluntary women\u2019s service organisations in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of particular interest to Inner Wheel is the research being done at Hudson on the use of umbilical cord blood to prevent and treat the brain injuries that can commonly affect very preterm babies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cInner Wheel\u2019s continued support of our cord blood research for over 10 years has led to multiple large NHMRC and MRFF grants, making it possible to take our early preclinical findings all the way through to clinical trials.\u201d – Dr Courtney McDonald.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Giving while living to help cancer research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ann Lorden\u2019s <\/strong>husband Max succumbed to renal cancer in 2017, not long after their granddaughter Ella was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at just eight years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This inspired her to do whatever she could to help improve cancer treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy children and grandchildren could have a lovely holiday with their inheritance after I\u2019ve gone, but there\u2019s more good to be done for kids just like Ella by giving while living.\u201d \u2013 Ann<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stomach cancer survivor <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite encountering more than her share of health challenges, 92-year-old Delva Walker<\/strong> has the most positive outlook you are ever likely to encounter. A survivor of both stomach cancer (13 years ago) and breast cancer, Delva is an inspiration, for her positivity and attitude of taking each day as it comes. She continues to support Hudson Institute\u2019s research with donations and advocacy, all aiming to see more advancements made in stomach cancer research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWhy isn\u2019t there more funding for stomach cancer research? In Hudson Institute\u2019s newsletter I saw that Professor Richard Ferrero was researching gastric cancer, so I wrote to him and he replied.\u201d- Delva Walker<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"Firefighters<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Firefighters support cancer research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fire Rescue Victoria are generously supporting Hudson Institute’s BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation research via the Firefighters Charity Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This donation will allow for further research into microRNAs and BRCA1 mutations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Fitting legacy for fitness coach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prominent Australian fitness coach, Daniel Wilson<\/strong>, died in May 2019, just two months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. He was only 37 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his memory, an appeal was launched to fund research into earlier, better ways of diagnosing this disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

This appeal aims to fund a scholarship in Daniel Wilson\u2019s name that will support a PhD student to progress this stomach cancer research to the next stage.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
