Sadly, paediatric oncologists are often faced with little option but to treat childhood cancers with repurposed drugs developed for adult cancers. These treatments are frequently ineffective and toxic. Mum, Nelly shares Eli\u2019s story, and two leading scientists share how their research is making a difference for children with cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eli-s-story-501-days-of-chemotherapy\">ELI&#8217;S STORY | 501 days of chemotherapy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after watching her infant son go through such an ordeal, Nelly sees the bright side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a big journey, but the best part is that he doesn\u2019t remember it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eli was just 16 months old when he went from being a happy, healthy boy to beginning chemo in the space of a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discomfort on Monday, a trip to emergency on Thursday after discovering a lump, and by Sunday he\u2019d been diagnosed and booked in to start treatment the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen they were doing the ultrasound I had this terrible sense of dread, but you never expect to hear someone tell you your child has cancer,\u201d Nelly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eli had an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (soft tissue cancer) in his bladder, and the treatment was harrowing, but three-and-a-half years later he remains cancer-free, with plenty of life ahead of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite so much medical intervention, his development is now back where it should be, with few signs of the ordeal he went through except for the regular six-monthly checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nelly knows who to thank for it: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMedical professionals \u2013 scientists like Ron and Jason \u2013 they\u2019re all just superheroes in my eyes. It\u2019s so personal for me, so if my story and our journey can help spread the word and attract extra funding, I will work my hardest and scream \u2018more funding, please&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"targeted-childhood-cancer-treatments\">Targeted childhood cancer treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#ed0a72\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#ed0a72\" id=\"next-generation-precision-medicine-program\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/research\/collaborative-programs\/childhood-cancer-program\/next-generation-precision-medicine-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Next Generation Precision Medicine program<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rarity is a virtue in some fields. Unfortunately, that\u2019s anything but true when it comes to childhood cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Professor-Ron-Firestein.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Ron Firestein who leads the Next Generation Precision Medicine childhood cancer program\" class=\"wp-image-57308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Professor-Ron-Firestein.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Professor-Ron-Firestein-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Professor-Ron-Firestein-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Professor-Ron-Firestein-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Professor-Ron-Firestein-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Professor Ron Firestein<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Not only are they often uneconomic for drug companies to pour research dollars into, but tissue samples can be hard to come by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Head of the Centre for Cancer Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/ron-firestein\/\">Professor Ron Firestein<\/a> wants to change all that with the <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/research\/collaborative-programs\/childhood-cancer-program\/next-generation-precision-medicine-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Next Generation Precision Medicine program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to significantly improve treatment for childhood cancer patients with the greatest unmet clinical need \u2013 those diagnosed with brain cancers and solid tumours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof Firestein\u2019s four-pronged approach to the problem includes going beyond genomic sequencing to what\u2019s called multi-omics, which studies the genome, transcriptome, epigenome and proteome of cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another crucial aspect of this program is the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/ccma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Childhood Cancer Model Atlas (CCMA)<\/a> \u2013 a tissue bank where samples of actual cancers are stored and reproduced, to be analysed and tested against potential therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CCMA is also the largest collection of high-risk paediatric solid tumour cell lines in the world, and for Prof Firestein and cancer researchers everywhere, it is a goldmine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on collaborations with 37 hospitals and medical research centres around the world, the CCMA also includes a searchable data portal to foster the collaborative and hypothesis-driven research needed to catalyse clinical translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"smarter-cancer-treatments-for-children\">Smarter cancer treatments for children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#ed0a72\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#ed0a72\" id=\"sarcoma-program\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/research\/collaborative-programs\/childhood-cancer-program\/adolescent-and-young-adult-sarcoma-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarcoma program<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It\u2019s not just the number of children who succumb to cancer that drives <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/jason-cain\">Dr Jason Cain<\/a> to pursue his research; it\u2019s also the ones who survive.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dr-Jason-Cain.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Jason Cain who leads the childhood cancer Sarcoma program\" class=\"wp-image-57309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dr-Jason-Cain.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dr-Jason-Cain-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dr-Jason-Cain-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dr-Jason-Cain-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dr-Jason-Cain-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr Jason Cain<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cChildhood cancer is a devastating diagnosis for the patient and family,\u201d Dr Cain said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe current treatments for childhood cancer (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) have remained unchanged for decades. Not all children respond to these therapies, and even those who do are often left with permanent side effects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany survivors of childhood cancer are left with debilitating long-term side effects of their treatments.
