We\u2019ve only scratched the surface of the potential applications of RNA therapies.\u201d- Associate Professor Michael Gantier<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRNA therapeutics is the technology of the decade,\u201d said A\/Prof Gantier. \u201cIt opens the opportunity to treat many diseases deemed incurable to date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rna-therapeutics\">RNA therapeutics<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DNA and RNA are a class of molecules called nucleic acids (the \u2018NA\u2019 in DNA and RNA). DNA contains the genetic information that controls which cells do what in our bodies and RNA converts that genetic blueprint into proteins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaccines aside, RNA therapeutics are already approved to treat a growing number of diseases; for example, a twice-yearly injection for people with high cholesterol to control their condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-the-immune-system-detects-rna\">How the immune system detects RNA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Sampaio is leading an&nbsp;mRNA Victoria Activation Program Grant to better understand <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/\/news\/searching-for-clues-to-how-rna-triggers-the-immune-system\/\">how the immune system detects RNA.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf we want to employ mRNA therapies to many other diseases, like&nbsp;cancer&nbsp;or gene therapy, we need to avoid side effects to improve tolerance and safety of these therapies,&#8221; Dr Sampaio said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rna-technology-for-autoimmunity\">RNA technology for autoimmunity <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\/Prof Gantier, with a grant from mRNA Victoria, is advancing work on short anti-inflammatory synthetic RNAs (also known as oligonucleotides).
