treatment promises to increase lung cancer survival"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Researchers are tackling the problem of chemoresistance in lung cancer patients with a new treatment, which offers hope of increased lung cancer survival rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/daniel-gough\/\">Associate Professor Dan Gough<\/a> says lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths worldwide; <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/research-group\/stat-cancer-biology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small cell lung cancer (SCLC)<\/a>, in particular, is an incredibly lethal form of lung cancer that has a mortality rate of around 95 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SCLC patients typically respond to front line platinum-based chemotherapy, but almost always relapse with drug resistant disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-huge-difference-to-lung-cancer-survival-rates\">A huge difference to lung cancer survival rates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat leaves very few treatment options, so anything that can reduce chemoresistance, or effectively treat recurrent disease will make a huge difference to lung cancer survival rates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur study, published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/rdcu.be\/daJZo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journal of Experimental and Clinical Cancer Research<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> has identified a new drug that is very effective against relapsed lung cancer offering a new hope to these patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur study developed models of resistance and performed drug screening to identify new agents,\u201d A\/Prof Gough said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"doubles-lung-cancer-survival-time\">Doubles lung cancer survival time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were able to show that a novel compound <em>Fimepinostat<\/em> is incredibly effective and indeed it doubles lung cancer survival time.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fimepinostat<\/em> has been used in clinical trials for other cancers, so the way is clear to use it in trials for SCLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial discussions have been held with the manufacturer of <em>Fimepinostat<\/em> about clinical trial design for this agent in small cell lung cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere has been an urgent and unmet need to identify new drugs that will improve the outcome for these patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--read-more-banner
