Monique and Baden share Luca&#8217;s story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid the fear and panic such a sentence creates, three-year-old Luca\u2019s parents, Monique and Baden, had little choice but to trust in the best that medical science could offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To treat the \u201cmass\u201d that a CT scan showed in his brain, Luca needed surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monique and Baden did not know whether Luca would survive, or how he might be affected if he did &#8211; and that was just the start of their cancer journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt turned out to be a high-grade glioblastoma \u2013 one of the rarest and most dangerous types of brain tumour,\u201d Monique said. \u201cBut the surgeons were confident they had removed it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s so rare they couldn\u2019t say \u2018this is what we do with this type of tumour\u2019 so we threw everything at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What followed was 11 rounds of chemotherapy over the next 10 months, then 33 consecutive days of radiotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was Luca&#8217;s story five years ago. Today Luca is a healthy, cheeky eight-year-old who is indirectly increasing the survival hopes of the next child with a glioblastoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Monique and Baden agreed to donate tissue samples from Luca\u2019s tumour for research, those cells are still being used to test potential treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where Hudson Institute comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"h-luca-s-tumour-sample-is-saving-other-children-s-lives\" style=\"color:#19425c\">Luca&#8217;s tumour sample is saving other children&#8217;s lives<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Professor-Ron-Firestein-and-Dr-Jason-Cain-in-their-lab-at-Hudson-Institute.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Ron Firestein and Dr Jason Cain work at Hudson Institute is helping children like Luca - It was developed through active collaborations with 34 cancer research institutes, including Stanford University (USA), the University of California San Francisco (USA), The Hospital for Sick Children (Canada), Johns Hopkins University (USA), McGill University (Canada), the Institute of Cancer Research (UK), and Hopp Children&#8217;s Cancer Center Heidelberg (Germany). The CCMA also benefited from the support of the Australian Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/our-work\/medical-research-future-fund\">Medical Research Future Fund<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/rcdfoundation.org\/\">Robert Connor Dawes Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at Harvard Medical School, Dr Mimi Bandopadhayay, says the CCMA is essential to help identify new treatments. \u201cThis work is a tour de force that includes the largest collection of brain tumour models, generating a resource that will be invaluable to researchers across the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just about saving lives, as Hudson\u2019s Dr Jason Cain explains. \u201cMany survivors of childhood cancer are left with debilitating long-term side effects of their treatments.
