Professor Rebecca Lim<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/rebecca-lim\/\">Associate Professor Rebecca Lim\u2019s<\/a> research aims to develop a nanomedicine for treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is among the top causes of liver cancer and will soon be the world\u2019s leading indication for liver transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNASH is a complex disease involving immune dysregulation, lipotoxicity, fibrosis and hepatocyte apoptosis,\u201d A Prof Lim said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-highly-effective-in-treating-this-liver-disease\"><strong>Highly effective in treating this liver disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, our research shows that nanoparticles shed by some cell types have the potential to be highly effective in treating people with NASH.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To progress this work, she has been awarded $890,000 over the next three years as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhmrc.gov.au\/funding\/find-funding\/development-grants\">National Health and Medical Research Council\u2019s Development Grant<\/a> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe failure of promising drugs is due to their inability to address all aspects of this complex disease,\u201d A Prof Lim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe have compelling evidence that nanoparticles shed by amniotic epithelial cells (a perinatal stem-like cell) have specific properties that make them an excellent candidate for use as a regenerative medicine for NASH.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n            <div class=\"inline-block-disease-snackbar bg-blue-100 border-l-4 border-pink-500 my-5
