{"id":55535,"date":"2023-04-06T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hudsonorgau.wpengine.com\/?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=55535"},"modified":"2024-05-08T15:38:53","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T05:38:53","slug":"social-solution-rare-ovarian-cancer-insights","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/social-solution-rare-ovarian-cancer-insights\/","title":{"rendered":"Social solution \u2013 rare ovarian cancer insights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cancer specialists have taken a novel path to advance their research \u2013 tapping into a Facebook group for rare ovarian cancer insights.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Simon-Chu-and-Maria-Alexiadis.jpg\" alt=\"Simon Chu and Maria Alexiadis are using rare ovarian cancer patient insights for their research\" class=\"wp-image-55550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Simon-Chu-and-Maria-Alexiadis.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Simon-Chu-and-Maria-Alexiadis-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Simon-Chu-and-Maria-Alexiadis-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Simon-Chu-and-Maria-Alexiadis-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Simon-Chu-and-Maria-Alexiadis-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>L\u2013R:<\/em> <em>Associate Professor Simon Chu and Maria Alexiadis<\/em><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Patients often don\u2019t feel heard by the medical profession, so this world-first study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/cncr.34767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Cancer<\/em><\/a> listened to women living with <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/cancer\/ovarian-cancer\/\">rare ovarian cancers<\/a> via the social media group they set up themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>743 members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/137194949766816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GCT-Survivor Sisters<\/a> (GCT-SS) Facebook\u00ae group chose to share their experiences of being treated for Granulosa Cell Tumours, putting the researchers in a privileged position and giving the women a chance to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US-based group member Sue Rodgers said they had been trying for many years to bring attention to this rare disease when researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/maria-alexiadis\/\">Maria Alexiadis<\/a> at Hudson Institute reached out and a wonderful relationship was formed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSocial media has played an extremely important part in sharing effective cancer treatments for GCT, research findings and educating people to advocate for themselves with their physicians who may have little knowledge of the disease, Ms Rodgers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--callout flex z-20 text-blue-800 bg-gray-100 p-6 mb-5 sm:mb-8 w-full\">\n        <div class=\"cms-content\">\n            <h2 id=\"what-is-gct\">What is GCT?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/latest-news\/one-two-punch-could-knock-out-rare-ovarian-cancer\/\">Granulosa Cell Tumours<\/a>\u00a0(GCT) are rare, making up two-seven per cent of malignant ovarian cancers. They can develop at any age, even in children. The condition has a high rate of late recurrence, meaning even if surgery is effective, women live for years in constant fear that their cancer might return.<\/li>\n<li>Associate Professor Simon Chu\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/research-group\/hormone-cancer-therapeutics\/\">Hormone Cancer Therapeutics research group<\/a>\u00a0is striving to bring hope to children and women with granulosa cell tumours \u2013 through better diagnosis, early detection and more targeted treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n    \n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tapping-into-women-s-cancer-experience\">Tapping into women&#8217;s cancer experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\/Prof Chu said it was a rare opportunity to tap into these women\u2019s experiences of their treatment and follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the exciting parts is that we\u2019re delving into an area that\u2019s new,\u201d Dr Chu said. \u201cEffectively what this group has done is build a medical database with some amazing information. What\u2019s even more special is that they chose to share that database with us, so we could help design better treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Alexiadis was part of a team including researchers from Monash and Deakin Universities; for all of them it was a new approach and a very worthwhile one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of its rarity, there\u2019s a lack of clinical evidence to point to the most effective treatments; there\u2019s even a lot of uncertainty about chemotherapy, and limited evidence regarding its benefit for both early and advanced stage of this disease,\u201d Ms Alexiadis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, naturally forming consumer groups on social media may assist with developing the evidence base for care and supporting those living with rare diseases such as GCT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Victoria White from Deakin University and lead author on the paper reporting the results of the GCT-SS data agrees. \u201cThere is growing interest and expectation that people with lived experience will be involved in research investigating their condition &#8211; this study demonstrates the benefits of this approach. Being able to access the database that the GCT-SS had developed through their group and then working with members of the group to report on the findings from their data has been a terrific experience and helps to ensure the issues consumers want to see addressed are recognised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shellharbour-based Tasha Armour, CEO of Rare Ovarian Cancer (ROC) Inc, said having a child diagnosed with a rare ovarian cancer that had previously received no research is a pain hard to put into words.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This research brings so much hope for future treatment options. I was thrilled to join my fellow Survivor Sisters members as co-authors of this study. It\u2019s been amazing to work with the team to get closer to a treatment for these rare cancers, especially Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumours, which are among the rarest ovarian cancers. We have now grown to over 1,800 worldwide and our members have become &#8220;experts&#8221; through their own experiences, supporting each other through a cancer that very few understand. Very early on, we realized we had a unique opportunity to gather information about our experiences in an effort to find patterns commonalities in our diagnoses, treatments and outcomes.&nbsp; We began actively gathering this data as part of our intake process and discussing it with our physicians and researchers in various countries.&nbsp; We are thrilled that Hudson Institute has seen value in our data and has provided the opportunity to present it to the cancer research community.
