{"id":54931,"date":"2023-03-15T06:00:51","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T19:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hudsonorgau.wpengine.com\/?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=54931"},"modified":"2024-08-05T09:55:48","modified_gmt":"2024-08-04T23:55:48","slug":"lymphoma-treatment-targets-multiple-diseases","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/lymphoma-treatment-targets-multiple-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Lymphoma treatment targets multiple diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The search for new therapies to treat a rare type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma has had an unexpected success \u2013 identifying a potential molecular target to treat other related forms of lymphoma as well.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-Lymphooma-treatment-News-story.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Christy Ying focusses her research on finding a new Lymphoma treatment at Hudson Institute.\" class=\"wp-image-54933\" style=\"width:300px;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-Lymphooma-treatment-News-story.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-Lymphooma-treatment-News-story-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-Lymphooma-treatment-News-story-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-Lymphooma-treatment-News-story-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-Lymphooma-treatment-News-story-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr Christy Ying<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/richard-ferrero\/\">Professor Richard Ferrero<\/a>, Dr Le (Christy) Ying and an international team focussed on finding new treatment options for a form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma that develops in the stomach and is linked to infection by the bacterium, <em>Helicobacter pylori<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They developed a pre-clinical model to study the development of stomach lymphoma associated with <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection, with their findings now being published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/path.6053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Journal of Pathology<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-lymphoma-treatment-targets\">Other lymphoma treatment targets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe this treatment may also be used for other related lymphomas that develop outside of the lymphatic system and for which the causes are unknown,\u201d said Professor Ferrero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing an antibody to block a key communication node between blood cells known as B and T cells, we showed that we could prevent the development of the precursor lesions leading to stomach lymphoma,\u201d Dr Ying added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut while it was known that interactions between B and T cells are important for the development of stomach lymphoma in humans, we were the first to show in a pre-clinical model that drugs blocking these interactions may be used to treat this <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/cancer\/\">cancer<\/a>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-cell-image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"773\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Christy-Ying-cell-image-1024x773.jpg\" alt=\"Image is of a tissue section from our pre-clinical model in which precancerous lesions of stomach lymphoma are seen to be predominantly composed of B cells (green) and surrounded by different types of immune cells (red, yellow).
