autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>VIEW VIDEO | <\/strong>Dr Jaclyn Pearson discusses her work on antimicrobial resistance (AMR)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Microbiologist Dr Jaclyn Pearson is one of 60 brilliant scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians who want to step into the media spotlight as STEM experts \u2013 they will be officially announced today by the Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Pearson\u2019s research is searching for solutions to <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/antimicrobial-resistance\/\">antimicrobial resistance (AMR)<\/a>, which the World Health Organisation calls&nbsp;one of the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scientist-rock-star-working-to-save-a-pillar-of-modern-medicine\"><strong>Scientist rock star working to save a pillar of modern medicine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAntibiotics have been a pillar of modern medicine.\u201d Dr Pearson said.&nbsp;\u201cHowever, as decades have progressed, our over-reliance on these \u2018miracle drugs\u2019 has seen the rise of resistant \u2018superbugs\u2019, creating a situation where deadly infections may again be untreatable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThe need to understand how &#8216;superbugs&#8217; evolve is now critical,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cPeople&nbsp;are dying&nbsp;from infections that antibiotics can no longer treat, and the problem will only get worse until we find a solution,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as being a Research Group Head in Hudson\u2019s Institute&#8217;s Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases, she\u2019s also a mother of three and a musician, so science is one of several strings in her bow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs well as my family and my research, music is my other passion in life \u2013 I was the drummer in an all-girl rock band called Lash in the early 2000\u2019s and in a band called The Preytells from 2004-2009.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inspiring-the-next-generations\"><strong>Inspiring the next generations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Husic congratulated the newest Superstars of STEM on stepping into the public arena to help inspire the next generations of diverse young Australians into STEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe need to boost diversity in our science, technology, engineering and mathematics sector is urgent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are huge skills shortages that can be addressed if we put our minds and collective effort to it \u2013 which means we have to draw deeply on our nation\u2019s expertise from all corners of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy doing so, we can deliver a stellar boost to our national economy and enable Australia to meet the growing demand for STEM-trained workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve always been a fan of the way the Superstars of STEM program pushes to deliver a diverse STEM workforce and ensures the next generation of scientists and technologists have visible role models.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-women-and-non-binary-talent-in-stem\"><strong>Women and non-binary talent in STEM<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Science and Technology Australia Chief Executive Officer Misha Schubert said the program gave women and non-binary talent in STEM crucial skills and confidence to step into expert commentary roles in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know it\u2019s really hard to be what you can\u2019t see,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why this game-changing program is helping to smash stereotypes of what a scientist, technologist, engineer or mathematician looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy becoming highly visible role models in the media, these Superstars of STEM are showing our diverse next generations of young people &#8211; especially our girls and non-binary kids &#8211; that STEM is for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Superstars of STEM is an initiative of Science and Technology Australia funded by the Australian Government\u2019s Department of Industry, Science and Resources. The next 60 Superstars of STEM will join the program in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a highly competitive selection process, the program selects 60 women and non-binary STEM experts and gives them the training, confidence, networks and experience to become sought-after media commentators as experts in their fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--callout flex z-20 text-blue-800 bg-gray-100 p-6 mb-5 sm:mb-8 w-full\">\n        <div class=\"cms-content\">\n            <p>Science and Technology Australia is the nation\u2019s peak body representing more than 105,000 scientists and technologists. Their flagship programs include <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au\/what-we-do\/science-meets-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science Meets Parliament<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au\/what-we-do\/superstars-of-stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Superstars of STEM<\/a>, and <a
