{"id":53413,"date":"2022-11-04T14:21:59","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T03:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=53413"},"modified":"2024-07-24T15:35:24","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T05:35:24","slug":"beating-antimicrobial-resistance","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/beating-antimicrobial-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"Beating antimicrobial resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dr Jaclyn Pearson, a leader in the fight against one of the world\u2019s most urgent medical problems &#8211; beating <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/antimicrobial-resistance\/\">antimicrobial resistance (AMR)<\/a>, has been granted $1.375 million over five years from a local philanthropist to progress her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Pearson is one of three Australian scientists to receive this year\u2019s the prestigious annual Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation Senior Medical Research Fellowships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowships are provided by the Viertel Foundation, to progress of vital research in the areas of cancer, dementia and infection responsiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organisation says antibiotics are the backbone of modern medicine, and AMR is one of the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beating-the-rise-of-superbugs\">Beating the rise of superbugs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Pearson is thrilled to receive this funding, which will enable her to continue and expand this vital work beating superbugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAntibiotics have been a pillar of modern medicine.\u201d Dr Pearson said. \u201cHowever, as decades have progressed, our over-reliance on these \u2018miracle drugs\u2019 has seen the rise of resistant \u2018superbugs\u2019, creating a situation where deadly infections may again be untreatable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe need to understand how &#8216;superbugs&#8217; evolve is now critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis research will uncover how antibiotic resistance is driving the ability of microbes to cause more severe disease, with the aim of identifying new therapeutic approaches to beat life-threatening superbug infections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are dying from infections that antibiotics can no longer treat, and the problem will only get worse until we find a solution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thank the Viertel Foundation for having the vision and resources to help accelerate such important research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--callout flex z-20 text-blue-800 bg-gray-100 p-6 mb-5 sm:mb-8 w-full\">\n        <div class=\"cms-content\">\n            <p><strong>READ MORE |<\/strong> the Viertel Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/viertel.org.au\/\">here<\/a>.
