Williams<\/a> is Emeritus Director and Distinguished Scientist at Hudson Institute of Medical Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His research\u00a0with PhD student Saleh Almasabi and Research Fellow Afsar Ahmed<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was recently published in the journal\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35692780\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frontiers in Oncology<\/a>,<\/em> showing for the first time that a key molecule plays a significant role in promoting the growth of bowel cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--callout flex z-20 text-blue-800 bg-gray-100 p-6 mb-5 sm:mb-8 sm:float-left sm:w-1\/2 sm:ml-6\">\n        <div class=\"cms-content\">\n            <h2 id=\"at-a-glance\">At a glance<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A key molecule called ILK promotes bowel cancer by suppressing the immune system<\/li>\n<li>Inhibiting the function of ILK in bowel cancer reduced its growth<\/li>\n<li>Hudson Institute researchers tackle bowel cancer from all angles in their search for ways to prevent bowel cancer and new treatments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n    \n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This molecule, known as integrin linked kinase (ILK), is involved in regulating cell activity and is present at high levels in bowel cancer, acting to suppress the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inhibiting-bowel-cancer-growth\">Inhibiting bowel cancer growth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe microenvironment surrounding a tumor is a hotbed of immune cell-cancer cell interactions that either inhibit tumor growth or promote its progression,\u201d Prof Williams said. \u201cWe seek to understand what controls this balance and how it may be altered to favour tumor regression and cure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur research shows that ILK moves the needle between immunity and cancer in favour of the tumor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research identified that inhibiting the function of ILK in bowel cancer cell lines reduced their growth and also blocked the expression of an important immune suppressor molecule PD-L1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bowel-cancer-fighting-drug-breakthrough\">Bowel cancer-fighting drug breakthrough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings could lead to the development of new cancer-fighting drugs based on the actions of ILK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis supports developing anti-ILK drugs that will not only directly target cancer cells but promote immunotherapy against tumors,\u201d Prof Williams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt provides a new paradigm for developing a clinical strategy for hard to treat solid tumors that exhibit high levels of ILK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese tumors are
