Sampaio<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s research that could have a huge impact on treatment of diseases including <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/covid-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a>, Zika virus, Dengue virus and RSV, and even help reduce physical reactions to mRNA vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/natalia-sampaio\/\">Dr Nat\u00e1lia Sampaio<\/a> from Hudson Institute has been awarded an <a href=\"https:\/\/djpr.vic.gov.au\/medical-research\/initiatives\/mrna-victoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mRNA Victoria Activation Program Grant<\/a> provided through the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR), worth $690,000 over three years to better understand how the immune system detects RNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf we want to employ mRNA therapies to many other diseases, like <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/cancer\/\">cancer<\/a> or gene therapy, we need to avoid side-effects to improve tolerance and safety of these therapies.\u201d Dr Sampaio said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a significant investment for understanding RNA and the immune system, and a rare opportunity for a researcher so early in her career, working in collaboration with<a href=\"https:\/\/findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au\/profile\/437085-christine-wells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Professor Christine Wells<\/a> from the University of Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Sampaio said human cells have evolved receptors to recognise viral infections by detecting unusual RNA, but exactly how our cells can tell foreign viral RNA apart from their own RNA is not well understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-rna-receptors-get-activated-in-the-immune-system\"><strong>How RNA receptors get activated<\/strong> in the immune system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will use cutting-edge methods to understand in-depth how RNA receptors in the immune system get activated during virus infection,\u201d she said. \u201cThis will help us better understand the initial trigger of the immune response to viruses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is also highly relevant to mRNA-based drugs because these receptors can misfire in response to these drugs and induce significant side-effects for patients.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ambitious, world-first RNA and the immune system project will compare and contrast various virus infections to determine what is in common between the activation of these important RNA receptors in the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cBy finding the \u2018common thread\u2019 between RNA molecules that stimulate the RNA receptors in the immune system, we hope to build a universal model of how these receptors are triggered in the immune system, to both understand their role in infection but also avoid their stimulation in mRNA therapy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"finding-how-immune-system-detects-rna-key-to-new-therapies\">Finding how immune system detects RNA key to new therapies <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits from this research could be far-reaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur discoveries on how RNA receptors get activated in the immune system during virus infection can be used to generate predictive algorithms to guide the development of mRNA therapies, so they avoid off-target activation of these inflammatory receptors,\u201d Dr Sampaio said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"block--callout flex z-20 text-blue-800 bg-gray-100 p-6 mb-5 sm:mb-8 w-full\">\n        <div class=\"cms-content\">\n            <h2 id=\"what-is-rna\"><strong>What is RNA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>RNA<\/em>\u00a0is short for ribonucleic acid.\u00a0<em>RNA<\/em>\u00a0is a large molecule made from a single strand of\u00a0<em>DNA. <\/em>Its purpose is to transfer instructions from the DNA in order to make proteins.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-mrna\"><strong>What is mRNA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>mRNA is short for messenger RNA. It is one of several different types of RNA and its role is to deliver the recipe for making proteins to the ribosomes \u2013 protein producers inside the cell.
