The discovery could help patients needing a transfusion of platelets, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"601\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Minni-Anko-RNA-News-story.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Minna-Liisa \u00c4nk\u00f6 discovers the key to platelet production and understanding RNA.\" class=\"wp-image-50342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Minni-Anko-RNA-News-story.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Minni-Anko-RNA-News-story-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Minni-Anko-RNA-News-story-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Minni-Anko-RNA-News-story-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Minni-Anko-RNA-News-story-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr Minna-Liisa \u00c4nk\u00f6<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Platelets are the smallest of all blood cells; they circulate in the bloodstream and bind together when they recognise damaged blood vessels, making them a vital part of the body\u2019s response to bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rna-regulatory-protein-discovered\">RNA regulatory protein discovered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now researchers led by <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/minni-anko\/\">Dr Minna-Liisa \u00c4nk\u00f6<\/a> at Hudson Institute and <a href=\"https:\/\/people.csiro.au\/N\/S\/Susie-Nilsson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Susie Nilsson<\/a>, Research Director for Biomedical Manufacturing at Australia\u2019s national science agency CSIRO, have discovered a protein which is crucial to the role RNA regulatory plays in the production of platelets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their latest research, published in the prestigious journal, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ashpublications.org\/blood\/article\/139\/9\/1359\/482849\/The-RNA-binding-protein-SRSF3-has-an-essential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blood<\/a><\/em>, gives hope that one day platelets may be able to be manufactured, reducing the reliance on blood donations for&nbsp;transfusions to <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/cancer\/\">cancer<\/a> patients, among other uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were able to characterise in molecular detail the cell that is best at making platelets and show that in the absence of this protein (serine-arginine rich splicing factor 3, or SRSF3) these efficient platelet producers were absent,\u201d Dr \u00c4nk\u00f6 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rna-platelet-discovery-informing-new-treatments\">RNA platelet discovery informing new treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Platelets carry no DNA, but they do carry RNA, and SRSF3 defines the types of RNA that are present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe protein, SRSF3, is like a designer that plans how the RNA landscape of these cells looks.
