{"id":47825,"date":"2022-03-17T09:35:16","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T22:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=47825"},"modified":"2022-06-20T14:53:59","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T04:53:59","slug":"targeting-viral-lung-infections-two-ways","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/targeting-viral-lung-infections-two-ways\/","title":{"rendered":"Targeting viral lung infections two ways"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A new anti-viral drug to target the cause of viral lung infections and the infection itself, could be a game-changer in treating <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/influenza\/\">severe influenza<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AProf-Michelle-Tate-News-story-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Associate Professor Michelle Tate outlining her research on viral lung infections such as influenza.\" class=\"wp-image-47794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AProf-Michelle-Tate-News-story-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AProf-Michelle-Tate-News-story-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AProf-Michelle-Tate-News-story-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AProf-Michelle-Tate-News-story-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AProf-Michelle-Tate-News-story.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption><em>Associate Professor Michelle Tate<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently few effective drugs available to treat severe viral lung infections, which can be fatal when our body\u2019s immune system overacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/michelle-tate\/\">Associate Professor Michelle Tate<\/a>, from Hudson Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/research-group\/viral-immunity-immunopathology\/\">Viral Immunity and Immunopathology<\/a> Research group, is working with Lateral Pharma Pty Ltd, developing drugs to treat severe lung infections including influenza and the common cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNew drugs which dampen damaging inflammation and reduce the impact of respiratory viral infections are desperately needed,\u201d A\/Prof Tate said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"finding-new-influenza-drugs\">Finding new influenza drugs <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cEach year in Australia on average there are around 3,500 deaths linked to flu and 18,000 hospitalisations,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen patients with severe flu are admitted to hospital there are no effective drugs available to reduce the response to the virus.\u201d<\/p><p>Lateral Pharma CEO, David Kenley OAM said there is a clear need for new antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs.<\/p><p>\u201cThey are needed for the treatment of a number of significant conditions caused by viruses which are not at present adequately controlled, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections and influenza,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cThis need is particularly prevalent in the elderly, where death rates from viral attack are higher.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Viral infections replicate when the virus infects its host by attaching to the host cells.
