{"id":44644,"date":"2021-12-15T17:53:09","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T06:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=44644"},"modified":"2024-05-30T10:50:13","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T00:50:13","slug":"colon-cancer-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/colon-cancer-breakthrough\/","title":{"rendered":"Colon cancer breakthrough &#8211; combo therapy halts cell growth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A colon cancer breakthrough at Hudson Institute has shown that combining two types of drugs targeting gene expression stops cancer proliferation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Assoc-Prof-Ron-Firestein-News-story.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Assoc-Prof-Ron-Firestein-News-story-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Assoc-Prof-Ron-FiresteinAssociate believes this colon cancer breakthrough could have far-reaching impact for all cancer types. \" class=\"wp-image-43980\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Associate Professor Ron Firestein<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Australia has one of the highest rates of colon cancer (also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/cancer\/bowel-cancer\/\">bowel cancer<\/a> or colorectal cancer) in the world &#8211; 1 in 13 Australians will develop the disease in their lifetime \u2013 and it is the nation\u2019s second deadliest cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now pre-clinical research has shown that disabling two proteins together robs cancer cells of their ability to express genes necessary for their growth and spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-cell-transcription-machinery-works\">How cell transcription machinery works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/authors.elsevier.com\/a\/1eF7-3vVUPGLCX\">Molecular Cell<\/a>, marks a significant step in the understanding of how the transcription machinery process works in cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/ron-firestein\/\">Associate Professor&nbsp;Ron Firestein<\/a>, Head of the Cancer Centre at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, believes this colon cancer breakthrough could have far-reaching impacts for not just bowel cancer but other cancer types as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn total, this work has found the \u2018two brake pads\u2019 that when pressed together stops cancer gene expression and growth,\u201d A Prof Firestein said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImportantly, the two drugs we tested together are already in clinical and pre-clinical development, offering an expedient path for translating these findings to patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis research goes beyond bowel cancer and shows that cancer cells are fundamentally evasive and utilise multiple paths to express the genes that they require for growth and spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"two-classes-of-proteins-drive-colon-cancer-cells\">Two classes of proteins drive colon cancer cells<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, we show that two classes of proteins, CDK8\/19 and BET proteins, work together to drive gene expression in cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemarkably, when cancer cells were treated with inhibitors targeting both proteins, they could no longer express the genes required for malignancy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A colon cancer research breakthrough at Hudson Institute has shown that combining two types of drugs targeting gene expression stops cancer proliferation.&hellip;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a class=\"read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/colon-cancer-breakthrough\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":43980,"menu_order":0,"template":"","issue":[],"tag":[],"story-type":[85],"treatment-type":[93],"class_list":["post-44644","hdsn_news_post","type-hdsn_news_post","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","story-type-discovery","treatment-type-precision-medicine"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
