More than one in seven Australian babies, around 20,000 each year are born growth-restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"> FGR can put babies at risk of heart, lung and brain injury and life-long problems like hypertension, cerebral palsy, autism, learning and other behavioural dysfunctions. However, certain maternal factors can increase the likelihood of FGR, including<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/dr-emily-camm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maternal obesity<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Having a previous pregnancy affected b FGR<\/li>\n<li>Smoking, drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs<\/li>\n<li>Some medicines<\/li>\n<li>Having an existing medical condition eg; high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Carrying multiples eg; twins, triplets<\/li>\n<li>Conceiving within 18 months of a previous birth<\/li>\n<li>Having previously had a small baby or stillbirth<\/li>\n<li>Being under 17 or over 35 years of age<\/li>\n<li>Having pregnancy complications eg; preeclampsia, heavy bleeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Uterine\/placental factors can also lead to FGR, such as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decreased blood flow in the uterus and placenta<\/li>\n<li>Detachment of the placenta from the uterus<\/li>\n<li>The placenta attaching too low in the uterus<\/li>\n<li>Infection in tissues around the fetus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reducing risk<\/p>\n<p>While some risk factors can&#8217;t be changed, others can be managed. A\/Prof Malhotra is a consultant neonatologist at Monash Children\u2019s Hospital and an Honorary Clinical Associate at Hudson Institute\u2019s Ritchie Centre.<\/p>\n<p>In preclinical research, Prof Miller and A\/Prof Malhotra have shown that advanced MRI techniques can detect altered brain organisation in the FGR brain.
