NEC is a major health challenge because of its insidious onset and rapid progression. Unchecked, the inflammation creates a hole or gap which allows the contents of the intestine to leak into the baby\u2019s abdomen and cause overwhelming bacterial infection (sepsis), and sometimes multi-organ failure and death.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common cause of surgical emergency and death in <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/infant-and-child-health\/preterm-birth\/\">premature babies<\/a> between days 15 and 60 of life.<\/li>\n<li>Up to a third (between 20-30 per cent) of babies who develop NEC die \u2013 a number that has changed little over the past 50 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                    <\/div>\n\n                                    <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n            \n            <div class=\"faq w-full flex flex-col bg-gray-100 mb-1\">\n                <div class=\"faq__question group relative py-4 pl-4 pr-16 sm:py-6 sm:pl-6 sm:pr-16 cursor-pointer\" data-target=\"block_025ba1602153ef514a153d4dba94f8c1-answer-2\">\n                    <h3 class=\"text-lg sm:text-xl font-bold text-blue-800 leading-tight group-hover:text-blue-500\" class=\"text-lg sm:text-xl font-bold text-blue-800 leading-tight group-hover:text-blue-500\" id=\"who-is-at-risk\">Who is at risk?<\/h3>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/themes\/hudson-au\/img\/arrow-down--pink.svg\" class=\"faq__arrow absolute w-auto h-3 transform transition-transform duration-300 -rotate-90\" style=\"top: calc(50% - (.75rem \/ 2)); right: 1.5rem;\" \/>\n                <\/div>\n                <div id=\"block_025ba1602153ef514a153d4dba94f8c1-answer-2\" class=\"faq__answer cms-content px-4 sm:px-6 pb-4 sm:pb-6 hidden\">\n                    <div class=\"cms-content\">\n                        <p>NEC is more common in premature infants, but also in very sick babies that are born with a heart disease. The contributing factors include babies who have<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weaker immune systems<\/li>\n<li>Underdeveloped intestines and lungs<\/li>\n<li>Difficulties moving oxygen carrying blood around their body, including to immature intestinal tissues<\/li>\n<li>Difficulties breaking down food &#8211; formula fed babies are at a higher risk of NEC than breast fed babies<\/li>\n<li>Dysbiosis of the gut \u2013 decreased beneficial microbiota and increased pathogenic bacteria in the gut<\/li>\n<li>Infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NEC sometimes affects several infants who are in the same area. While NEC does not spread between babies, a virus or bacteria that causes it can. Getting immediate treatment is vital to stop the condition taking hold. This includes the insertion of a tube through the nose into the stomach to remove fluid and keep the stomach empty.<\/p>\n<p>Other supports include extra oxygen or a ventilator\u00a0if the stomach is too swollen for breathing, and regular X-rays are used to monitor the condition.<\/p>\n<p>If the baby does not respond, and a hole develops, surgery is needed to remove injured and dead intestine.\u00a0 Some infants who have surgery may not be able to absorb nutrients normally and may need a bowel transplant to live. New treatments.<\/strong> Inflammation is known to play a central role in the pathogenesis of NEC. New microbiota treatments. <\/strong>From the moment of birth, the microbial life in and on a newborn\u2019s body begins to establish. Termed the microbiome, the exact microbes and even the order they arrive can have immense impacts on health throughout an entire life. Despite this importance, very little is known about the effect of microbial communities in health or disease.<\/p>\n<p>By gaining a deeper understanding of the role of the microbiome in neonatal health, particularly intestinal diseases such as NEC, this project will shed light on the importance of commensal bacteria and how probiotic treatment might confer a health benefit to the
