{"id":31504,"date":"2020-05-12T12:43:22","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T02:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utter-drop.flywheelsites.com\/?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=31504"},"modified":"2024-02-19T15:42:18","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T04:42:18","slug":"2-2-million-awarded-to-tackle-rare-ovarian-cancer","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/2-2-million-awarded-to-tackle-rare-ovarian-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"$2.2 million awarded to tackle rare ovarian cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"intro has-medium-font-size\">Women with a rare and potentially aggressive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/cancer\/ovarian-cancer\/\">ovarian cancer<\/a> will benefit from a grant to continue ground-breaking research into new detection and treatment methods.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Simon-Chu-lab-edited-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Simon Chu is working with collaborators to improve outcomes for women with a rare ovarian cancer.\" class=\"wp-image-42447\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr Simon Chu<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Led by the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, a collaboration to combat ovarian granulosa cell tumours (GCT) has received $2,218,870 from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhmrc.gov.au\/funding\/find-funding\/mrff-emerging-priorities-and-consumer-driven-research-initiative-2019-ovarian-cancer-research-grant-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emerging Priorities and Consumer Driven Research Initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is part of $16.2 million that the Federal Health Minister, The Hon Greg Hunt, announced for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/ministers\/the-hon-greg-hunt-mp\/media\/more-than-16-million-for-ovarian-cancer-breakthrough-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eight ovarian cancer projects<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/ovariancancerday.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Ovarian Cancer Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/simon-chu\/\">Dr Simon Chu<\/a>\u2019s Hormone Cancer Therapeutics team at Hudson Institute is working with collaborators to improve outcomes for women with hormonally active GCT \u2013 a rare subset of ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Chu says the grant will allow the team to build on progress already made in understanding and fighting GCT, which accounts for 5-10 per cent of ovarian cancers and can occur at any age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/latest-news\/one-two-punch-could-knock-out-rare-ovarian-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">combination treatment approach for GCT<\/a>, and using a large-scale genome sequencing approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/latest-news\/genetic-mutation-could-be-behind-aggressive-hormone-driven-ovarian-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">map the tumour\u2019s genome<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real breakthrough for us,\u201d Dr Chu says. \u201cIt\u2019s recognising that the work we\u2019re doing is important as well as meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-real-world-data-for-robust-research\"><strong>Using real world data for robust research <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team aims to identify genetic mutations that cause GCT, develop more efficient and cost-effective testing, find gaps in patient information, care and services, and further investigate personalised and combination therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five research themes are<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patient reported outcomes: Analysing an international social media database of 804 patients created by USA group GCT Survivor Sisters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genomics: Using the latest sequencing techniques to identify mutations, genes and\/or pathways that lead to poor outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Molecular pathogenesis: Using innovative gene editing techniques to establish how mutations cause GCT.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved diagnosis\/detection: Developing more sensitive diagnosis and surveillance techniques.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Novel combination therapy: Investigating combination drug treatments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Chu is looking forward to analysing the \u2018real world data\u2019 of Survivor Sisters, a global Facebook group whose members share details of their treatment journey. It provides unique access to a large cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOne of the exciting parts of this grant is we\u2019re delving into an area that\u2019s new,\u201d Dr Chu says. \u201cEffectively what this group has done is build this database with some amazing information.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personalising-treatment-for-improved-results\"><strong>Personalising treatment for improved results <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ovarian cancer has the lowest female cancer survival rate. Only 43 in 100 women diagnosed lives for five years. Cancer Australia estimates that 1500 women will be diagnosed and 1000 die from the disease in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GCT are initially slow growing and relatively easy to detect due to hormonal changes.
