About 300,000 new cases are diagnosed globally each year, with an estimated 60 percent of women dying within five years after diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"271\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759-300x271.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Andrew Stephens and his team have developed a simple blood test to improve ovarian cancer diagnosis.\" class=\"wp-image-30452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759-768x695.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759-1024x926.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759-1536x1390.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/249_Andrews-Stephens_20180215-scaled-e1583903331759.jpg 1888w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dr Andrew Stephens<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The collaborative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-59009-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u2014involving researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmit.edu.au\/news\/all-news\/2020\/feb\/ovarian-cancer-diagnosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RMIT University<\/a>, Hudson Institute, Monash University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the University of Melbourne\u2014found that testing for a specific immune biomarker allows clinicians to identify whether growths on the ovaries are cancerous or not, without the need for tests like MRI scans or ultrasounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur study showed that measurement of the IL-6 protein, in combination with existing clinical tests, provided high levels of accuracy in diagnosing ovarian cancer\u2014similar to high-resolution imaging,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/andrew-stephens\/\">Dr Andrew Stephens<\/a>, Research Group Head of the Ovarian Cancer Biomarkers Research group at Hudson Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis approach could substantially improve the treatment of ovarian cancer patients, particularly in situations where high-resolution imaging equipment is not available or difficult to access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPre-operative identification of ovarian cancer\u2014and subsequent referral to a specialist\u2014can significantly improve outcomes for patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-impact-could-the-test-have\">What impact could the test have?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Author and Chief Investigator, RMIT University\u2019s Professor Magdalena Plebanski, said the test could be an important diagnostic tool for assessing suspicious ovarian growths before operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur new test is as accurate as the combined results of a standard blood test and ultrasound,\u201d said Plebanski, a Senior National Health and Medical Research Council Fellow at RMIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is especially important for women in remote or disadvantaged communities, where under-resourced hospitals may not have access to complex and expensive equipment like ultrasound machines or MRI scanners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt also means patients with benign cysts identified through imaging could potentially be spared unnecessary surgeries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis study looked at women with advanced ovarian cancer, but we hope further research could explore the potential for adding this biomarker to routine diagnostic tests at earlier stages of the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study used an immune marker for inflammation (IL-6) together with cancer markers to detect epithelial ovarian cancer in blood.
