The disease often comes with vague symptoms, such as bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue or loss of appetite \u2013 all of which may be attributed to other conditions. Sadly, this means that ovarian cancer is often not detected until the advanced stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-year trial involves around 300 at-risk women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations and will test whether the method developed by Dr Stephens\u2019 team detects early stage disease for the most common type of ovarian cancer and pre-cancerous lesions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur \u2018Active Ratio Test\u2019 measures changes in a key immune process, to give an indication of the presence of a growing tumour,\u201d Dr Stephens said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about the potential for the test to detect the cancer when it is still confined to the ovary and at its most treatable. Her work is focused on developing new drugs to close this \u2018loophole\u2019 to stop tumours spreading and at the same time prevent chemotherapy resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will trial a new and exciting approach to target ovarian cancer cells. This innovative approach has the potential to stop the growth and spread of tumours at initial diagnosis or relapse, and increase survival statistics for ovarian cancer patients,\u201d Dr Bilandzic said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hormone-cancer-therapeutics-research-group\"><strong>Hormone Cancer Therapeutics Research Group<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/053_Simon-Chu_20171019-e1522301795502.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/053_Simon-Chu_20171019-e1522301795502-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Simon Chu helps raise ovarian cancer awareness through the 2019 White Shirt Campaign.\" class=\"wp-image-18862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/053_Simon-Chu_20171019-e1522301795502-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/053_Simon-Chu_20171019-e1522301795502-1000x1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/053_Simon-Chu_20171019-e1522301795502-320x320.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/simon-chu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Simon Chu<\/a><\/strong> and his team are working to improve treatment for an uncommon hormone-driven type of ovarian cancer, known as granulosa cell tumours (GCT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For women whose ovarian cancer is detected at a later stage, or those women who experience recurrent disease, new treatments are needed to ensure that they survive for longer and have the best possible quality of life. GCT are often diagnosed earlier than the more common ovarian cancers, however they have a high recurrence rate and often resurface as aggressive tumours anywhere up to 20 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Chu\u2019s team is working on a \u2018double hit\u2019 by combining an anti-diabetic drug with an anti-cancer drug targeting a protein known as XIAP, which drives GCT growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis study could fundamentally change the way we treat GCT through a targeted approach. These two drugs are already in clinical or pre-clinical use for other diseases.
