{"id":18912,"date":"2018-04-09T11:10:19","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T01:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utter-drop.flywheelsites.com\/?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=18912"},"modified":"2022-02-02T14:18:39","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T03:18:39","slug":"fighting-a-deadly-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/fighting-a-deadly-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighting a deadly pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"intro has-medium-font-size\">Why do seasonal strains of influenza make many people sick yet cause relatively few deaths, while 40 per cent of people affected by strains of avian influenza, or \u2018bird flu\u2019, succumb to their infection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/032_Lab-Groups_20161005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/032_Lab-Groups_20161005-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Michelle Tate and Associate Professor Ashley Mansell say a discovery could form a strategy to protect the world\u2019s population from a potential outbreak of pandemic influenza.\" class=\"wp-image-18913\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Dr Michelle Tate and Associate Professor Ashley Mansell.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A discovery by <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/ashley-mansell\/\">Associate Professor Ashley Mansell<\/a> could form a strategy to protect the world\u2019s population from a potential global outbreak of pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/influenza\/\">influenza.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jbc.org\/content\/292\/3\/826.short\">paper published in <em>The Journal of Biological Chemistry<\/em><\/a>, A\/Prof Mansell and his team have identified that a protein called PB1-F2, produced by a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza called H7N9, is detected by the immune system of the infected person or animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile inflammation is a normal response to seasonal flu infection, leading to symptoms like fever and aching joints, PB1-F2 induces an overzealous response and sets into motion a \u2018cytokine storm\u2019, which is often more damaging than the virus itself. The body burns up with inflammation, leading to organ failure and even death,\u201d A\/Prof Mansell explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWhen the immune system detects PB1-F2, it triggers a highly inflammatory response by an immune sensor complex called the inflammasome. It is almost like the body\u2019s alarm system for highly pathogenic viruses.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, in previous studies, the team showed that targeting this inflammasome with a new drug compound could reduce the \u2018cytokine storm\u2019 in those infected during a global pandemic event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"global-potential\"><strong>Global potential<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is concern that strains of avian influenza such as H5N1 and H7N9 could become easily transmissible from person to person. Since 2003, when the strains first surfaced in humans, more than 2500 people in south-east and east Asia have died from these infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAs a global community, we live in the shadow of a severe or pandemic influenza outbreak that could devastate the world&#8217;s population. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Spanish Influenza outbreak which infected approximately 30 per cent of the world\u2019s population and claimed 50-100 million lives \u2013 more than both World Wars combined,\u201d A\/Prof Mansell says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur ability to tackle such an outbreak is limited.
