Sussan Ley, announced&nbsp;the grants in two announcements, on Saturday&nbsp;(3 December) and in late October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudson Institute researchers were awarded a total of $10,156,392.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Anne Kelso, CEO of the NHMRC, Australia\u2019s foremost medical research funding body, said that the project grants, announced on Friday, would support an extraordinary breadth of research around Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThey include 60 fellowships for our future research leaders, laboratory studies of the origins of disease and clinical trials of new therapies,\u201d Professor Kelso said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudson Institute of Medical Research Director, Professor Bryan Williams, congratulated all of the recipients, and thanked the NHMRC and the Health Minister for their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" damage following fetal hypoxia or birth asphyxia: Using creatine to preserve mitochondrial function\u201d Project Grant&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a need for preventative therapy that can be given to a mother before she gives birth to protect her baby from \u2018oxygen starvation\u2019, or hypoxia, which can threaten the baby\u2019s brain and vital organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A research project led by Associate Professor David Walker will examine whether creatine, a naturally occurring amino acid derivative, could protect the fetal brain from the damaging, and often life-long, effects of hypoxia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll determine what effect oxygen starvation has on the structure and function of mitochondria in the brain, then look at whether creatine could offer protection against the loss of fetal brain function,\u201d A\/Prof Walker said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n            <div transforming growth factor-\u03b2 activity\u201d Project Grant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two of the most prevalent respiratory diseases, and which leave sufferers vulnerable to viral and bacterial lung infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of Hudson Institute researchers will investigate whether blocking a protein called Transforming growth factor-\u03b2 (TGFB), which drives scarring in the lungs of asthma and COPD patients, may also help to prevent bacterial and viral infections in the lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis research has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life of these patients, whilst reducing the burden of chronic lung diseases on the Australian Health Care system,\u201d Dr Belinda Thomas, Research Fellow in Hudson\u2019s Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases, said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-e-ar2-a-new-target-for-breast-cancer-metastasis\"><strong>E<\/strong>AR2 \u2013 a new target for breast cancer metastasis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/colin-clyne\/\">Associate Professor&nbsp;Colin Clyne<\/a> and Dr Kristy Brown \u201cEAR2: A novel driver of breast cancer proliferation\u201d Project Grant&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drugs such as Tamoxifin are used to block the action of hormones such as estrogen, which drive breast cancer growth.
