{"id":11119,"date":"2016-06-16T03:58:46","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T03:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utter-drop.flywheelsites.com\/?post_type=hdsn_news_post&#038;p=11119"},"modified":"2022-02-09T15:03:25","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T04:03:25","slug":"hudson-institute-discovery-could-help-buy-time-during-global-avian-influenza-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"hdsn_news_post","link":"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/news\/hudson-institute-discovery-could-help-buy-time-during-global-avian-influenza-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Hudson Institute discovery could help \u2018buy time\u2019 during global avian influenza pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A team of researchers at Hudson Institute of Medical Research have found that timely blocking of the body\u2019s own immune response to infection from&nbsp;a severe or pathogenic strain of <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/influenza\/\">influenza<\/a> could be vital in treating patients infected during a global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CiiiD-group.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CiiiD-group-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Ashley Mansell and Dr Michelle Tate discussing a global influenza pandemic\" class=\"wp-image-10136\" width=\"383\" height=\"255\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategies for halting the spread of a global influenza pandemic \u2013 such as an outbreaks of avian influenza in humans or that seen during the 1918-1919 Spanish Influenza in which at least 50 million people died worldwide \u2013 are limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new study, led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/ashley-mansell\/\">Dr Ashley Mansell<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/researcher-profile\/michelle-tate\/\">Dr Michelle Tate<\/a>, found that blocking the NLRP3 inflammasome, part of the body\u2019s own immune response, at the height of infection from pathogenic strains of influenza staved off its deadly effects for up to two days, potentially giving the body a chance to fight back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, the culmination of three years\u2019 work by Dr Ashley Mansell\u2019s team in Hudson\u2019s Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases, has been published in the journal Scientific Reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe inflammasome is both \u2018good cop\u2019 and \u2018bad cop\u2019. It is a critical early response to influenza that helps our body to mature its immune response, clear the virus, and protect us from disease,\u201d Dr Mansell said.<\/p><p>\u201cWhen it is overstimulated by a deadly infectious disease, the inflammasome turns \u2018bad cop\u2019 and can unleash a \u2018cytokine storm\u2019 that actually works against us. The body burns up with infection from the inside, which can lead to organ failure and mortality.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, Dr Mansell and his colleague Dr Julie McAuley from University of Melbourne discovered that a protein called PB1-F2, which is only found in its full-length form in pathogenic strains of influenza like avian flu (not common seasonal strains) overstimulates the inflammasome to unleash this cytokine storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the most recent study, Dr Mansell\u2019s team has now shown that blocking the inflammasome at the height of infection can actually \u2018halt\u2019 inflammation and offer some protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team gave an inflammasome inhibitor called MCC950, created by Professor Matthew Cooper at the University of Queensland, to mice with strains of influenza A virus which mimic the strains of influenza in past pandemics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They found that mice given the infammasome inhibitor during the initial stages of infection were hyper- susceptible to the deadly effects of virus. Mice that were given one dose of the inflammasome inhibitor when the infection was at its peak lived for an additional 48 hours, and the main signifiers of the virus (the \u2018cytokine storm\u2019 and lung inflammation) were also suppressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n            <div class=\"inline-block-disease-snackbar bg-blue-100 border-b-4 border-pink-500 my-5 sm:my-8\">\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/hudson.org.au\/disease\/inflammation\/influenza\/\" class=\"block text-blue-700 hover:text-pink-500 text-xl xl:text-2xl font-bold p-4 sm:p-6\"><span class=\"inline\">Learn more about Influenza<\/span>\n                    <svg class=\"inline ml-1 h-4 sm:h-5 align-center text-pink-500 fill-current\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"15 0 24 34.78\">\n                        <polygon points=\"19.17 34.78 16.27 31.66 31.63 17.39 16.27 3.11 19.17 0 37.87 17.39 19.17 34.78\"><\/polygon>\n                    <\/svg>\n                <\/a>\n            <\/div>\n        \n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOur team has shown that if we give an inflammasome inhibitor to mice with a highly virulent strain of influenza at the height of disease, we can block the effects for two days, giving the immune system a chance to kick in and reduce inflammation,\u201d Dr Tate said.<\/p><p>\u201cBuying additional time may allow the immune system to mature and hopefully resolve the infection.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Global health organisations are currently monitoring a strain of avian influenza called the H7N9 viruses, which is transmitted to humans through contact with poultry. There have been 770 reported cases in China since March 2013, and the virus has a 38 per cent mortality rate in hospitalised cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organisation has not ruled out human-to-human contact for a cluster of deaths which occurred earlier this year.
